Drawstring Bag

Sewn chartreuse and pink floral project bag nicely ironed and folded in half on a wooden tray. It has natural ribbon for the drawstring through a coral contrast fabric channel and natural wooden ball beads at the ends of the ribbon. Accompanied by a few dried daffodil blooms and a yellow yarn cake and a peachy yarn cake.

I really like bags. Big bags. Small bags. Zipper bags. Drawstring bags. Bags in bags in bags..... Though there's still snow on the ground, the smell of spring is in the air. I was inspired to pull together fabric and materials to sew up a drawstring project bag today. This size can easily hold a pair of socks and possibly a small or medium-ish sized shawl (I suppose it also depends on how many different yarn cakes are needed). I followed Mollie's "How to Sew a Drawstring Bag" (https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/how-to-sew-a-drawstring-bag-4685165) tutorial. It's clear, concise, and has photos with each step.

Two image collage of a drawstring bag that's pink and chartreuse floral with natural ribbons that have natural wooden ball beads at the ends secured with a knot. Left image the bag is drawn closed. Right image the bag is open with the top folded down. The interior lining fabric is a light green with mini white polka dots. The channel for the ribbon is in a contrast coral fabric.

Below are some notes on things I did differently or took up her suggestions on:

  • fusible interfacing to outer fabric because I like my bags to stand up
  • boxed bottom because I like my bags to stand up
  • little cotton loop inside and fabric loop with rectangular ring inside for removable progress keepers
  • didn't have rope or cord on hand so I used ribbon and natural wooden ball beads to secure the ends from going through the drawstring channel
Drawstring bag is open with the top folded over. Focus on the ribbons with natural wooden ball beads at the ends.

LOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT and looking forward to making more!!! This was a couple hour project of focused time. You could also break it up into cutting out pieces, sewing pieces, etc but I find my work flow most efficient when I can sit down and do it all at once.

Pulled shut drawstring bag with a coral contrast channel where the ribbons are pulled through.

3/7/2020-Edited to add another bag!
  • organic cotton ribbon
  • two different exterior fabrics
  • added another 1/2 inch to width of drawstring channel
  • the rest I did the same as my first bag

Neatly folded sewn bag flat on a wooden tray next to blooming cactus and dried daffodil flowers. Bag has a chartreuse floral drawstring channel with natural wooden ball beads secured at the ends of the ribbon. Main exterior fabric is lavender floral and a tan boxed bottom.
