Baby Carrier Review: Bijou Wear Abstract Daybreak

Abstract Daybreak Up Close and Personal

Painting was part of my undergraduate studies. Water in the form of lakes, hoses, pools, rain, etc. was part of my childhood. When I first laid eyes on Abstract Daybreak by Bijou Wear, I was smitten. The painterly strokes reminded me of water being blown across a lake, reflecting off a rising (or setting) sun.

Lakeside
There aren't a ton of metallic textiles for woven wraps out there. The silver threads literally shimmer in the sun.

The Shimmer is Real

Stats:

  • Carrier: Bijou Wear Abstract Daybreak
  • Material: 100% cotton (Egyptian mercerized cotton and standard cotton)
  • Length: size 3 (approximately 138"/3.5 m), base minus 2
  • Width: approximately 25.5"/64 cm
  • Density: approximately 240 grams per square meter
  • Wearees (over the summer):
    • 4 year old (approximately 31 pounds/14 kilograms, 39 inches/99 centimeters)
    • 1 year old (approximately 21 pounds/9.5 kilograms, 29.5 inches/75 centimeters)

Alrighty, now on to the wrap qualities. This wrap is on the thinner side of medium-weight with a dense weave and lovely microtexture. The density means it isn't prone to pulls or sand getting stuck in the weave which is awesome for summers at the beach! Plus, once you've got all passes tightened and in place, it isn't likely to sag or loosen. Its thinness made for a lovely summer-time wrap. We used a base minus 2 (size 3 for us) which meant typically one or two layer carries. The smoothness made it feel cool to touch. But don't be fooled by the smoothness equating it to be slippery. There's glide for sure but the four weave structures making up the microtexture give it just enough texture to provide some grip. And P.S. - I totally despise double knotting under bum in back carries but I can do it easily in this wrap. The thinness and glide makes it so much less sweaty of a process.

Summertime
I primarily wore the toddler in this carrier and it was comfortable for both short ups and longer wrap naps. We wore in a variety of front, hip, and back carries. The older child went up comfortably in it too but we didn't test it for as long of periods.

Summary: Wrap It Up

Below is a summary of things that might make you go for Abstract Daybreak, or not. Keep in mind that the list is subjective and you may love the wrap even if you check off more than half the things on the "not-for-me" list below. We've enjoyed it as a base minus 2 in one or two layer carries but we've heard it's lovely in base length as well with two or three layer carries!

This might not be love at first wrap if you're looking for:
  • more bounce
  • more cush
  • more grip
  • more texture
  • something that rocks a half knot
  • more width (this is slightly narrower than other Bijou Wear woven wraps)
This might be your cup of tea if you're looking for:
  • easy care
  • minimal stretch
  • more glide than grip
  • dense weave not prone to pulls
  • something that packs down smaller
  • a thinner, less wide woven wrap for a newborn or smaller baby
With that I bid you happy wearing!
