Heart Happy Hats (knit)

Two knit hats with pom poms on top of each other on a white surface. Bottom one has a multi-colored pom pom and coordinating ribbing; base is cream with multi-colored hearts. Hat on top has the opposite coloring set-up.

In addition to playing around with color, I wanted to play around a little with different textures of yarn too. But I needed to find yarns that were also similar in weight otherwise my gauge would be all wonky and I don't always take the time to make gauge swatches to figure out (aka adjust) patterns accordingly. It's like a science experiment - change only one variable at a time otherwise it's hard to figure out what went wrong (or right!).

Two knit hats on top of each other. Bottom one has a multi-colored ribbing with a cream hat base that has multi-colored hearts. Top of the hat has the opposite coloring scheme.

The "Facet Stones" yarn by Loops & Threads varies a little in thickness throughout the ball of yarn and the color changes too! So fun.

Notes
  • Gauge: 4x4" = 18 rows x 16 stitches
  • Baby Size:
    • I repeated the body pattern until 5.5 inches from the cast on edge but could've stopped earlier at 5 inches but I lost track of my ruler.
  • Toddler Size:
    • for the ribbing I accidently missed 1 row so I had 7 rows of ribbing instead of 8 (it's also a little less bulky that the cream yarn so it takes more rows to work up the same length of ribbing so if you want a longer ribbing, add on more rows)
  • I varied the colorwork slightly between each size and wrote the patterns accordingly below. If you want to make it differently for what's written, you'll just have to play around with the naming of the colors used to keep track of which is color A or B!
Instructions (Baby)
  • Color A - cream, Color B - multi-colored
  • with smaller needles and color A, long-tail co 48, join in round being careful not to twist, place marker

  • switch to bigger needles and join color B
  • *k1-A, k1-B*
  • k-B in round
  • *k1-B, k1-A*
  • k-B in round
  • repeat last 4 rounds until 5 inches from cast on edge (I went to 5.5 inches but shorter may fit more snug but slouchy is cute too - can also fold up ribbing until baby grows into hat)
